RESEARCH DESIGN IN THE SOCIAL SCIENCES & HUMANITIES

 Course Structure and Guidelines

            1.   The course is designed to teach proposal writing.  The object is to complete a fundable or near fundable research proposal by the end of the quarter.

            2.   The course is organized around weekly written assignments.  Assignments must be done on time. Bring the written assignments to class when they are due and to your personal appointment with me.  Expect to constantly revise.

            3.  The sequence of assignments is NOT the order in which the final proposal is organized.  Guidelines for the final order of are outlined in the handout, "Components of a Research Proposal."

            4.  Each week the seminar lecture will guide you in the next week's assignment.  The following week, after you have done the assignment, we will review the guidelines before presenting the next week's assignment.

            5.  Funding agencies differ in their proposal design.  The course is organized for a "maximal" proposal.

            6.  You will be required to complete the "in class" proposal following the "Components of a Research Proposal" outline AND an application for an external funding agency of your choice.  The latter will be based on the former, but will follow the agency's format and guidelines.

            6.  You can make best use of your personal appointment by writing down the questions with which you need help.

            7.  Permission of instructor is required for enrollment.  Auditors also require permission of the instructor.  Formal enrollment is preferred.

            8.  Please enroll in a 299 with your major professor to work on your proposal.

            9.  No incompletes will be given.  Seminar members who do not complete the seminar work will receive an "F,"  unless compelling reasons are given prior to due date of proposal.

            10.  Proposals are to be 10 single-spaced typed pages.  Use Times New Roman, 12-point font.  Leave 1" margins on all sides.

            11.  This course may be repeated once for credit.

            12.  Please make sure to leave one copy of any proposal you submit to a funding agency with Department staff and your major professor.

            13.  If you receive external funding and are applying for a University Fellowship, including a copy of the award letter with the fellowship application may help your application.

            14.  If your proposal is funded, I would appreciate having a copy with your written permission to use it to help future students learn how to write successful proposals.

            15.  Grading: Based primarily on the Final proposal with class participation and writing groups factored in.
