Writing Assignments
Writing assignments are due in class on the date indicated. Make one copy for yourself and hand one in. When you are making a presentation, bring a copy for each seminar member. If making copies presents a problem, let me know in advance. Seminar members are required to inform themselves of the resources at the UC Davis Office of Research, check their website. You will be required to complete TWO proposals: 1.) The "in class" proposal will follow the format in the handout "Components of a Research Proposal." 2.) A formal application for a funding agency which will be based on the "in class proposal" but will follow the format and requirements of the funding agency you choose. Obtain application forms for the funding agency. Members are required to complete the HUMAN SUBJECTS Tutorial, on-line.
FOR PEDAGOGICAL REASONS, THE ASSIGNMENTS FOLLOW A SEQUENCE DIFFERENT FROM THAT OUTLINED IN "COMPONENTS OF A RESEARCH PROPOSAL." FOR THE FINAL CLASS PROPOSAL FOLLOW THE SEQUENCE IN "COMPONENTS." NOTE, THE ASSIGNMENTS ARE LONGER THAN THE FINAL PROPOSAL. THIS IS TO ALLOW YOU TO REFINE.
1. Apr 13: Six page trial draft of the entire proposal. (See materials http://sjoseph.ucdavis.edu)
2. Apr 20 : One page statement of the research question or a list of substantively interrelated questions. A one page bibliography of relevant literature. Research question and bibliography should be continually updated and resubmitted with each assignment.
3. Apr 27: One page statement of answer to the research questions. Include a list of variables and with the terms clearly defined.
4. May 4: Three page statement of methods. Include explanations of what counts as evidence (data that answers your question); the data-gathering techniques or instruments, procedures, tests; selection of site or population; and methods for evaluation of findings (how will you know the evidence answers the question); statements of research already conducted or any experience you may have relevant to your ability to do the project (track record). Outline how you will meet Human Subjects Review Protocols. Do Human Subjects Tutorial on-line. Statement of which funding agency you chose and why. Make sure you have their formal application form.
5. May 11: Three page literature review. One to two paragraphs statement of why this research project needs to be done. One to two paragraph statement of the significance of the project.
6. May 18: Three page statement of theory. Justify plausibility of answers to research question.
7. May 25*: Half page abstract. One page budget and justification. One page time table. One page vitae. (Submit Human Subjects Tutorial Certificate).
8. June 1 *: Presentations of proposals in seminar (Dress as for an Interview)
PLEASE INVITE YOUR MAJOR PROFESSOR AND OTHER FACULTY/STUDENTS IN ADVANCE TO ATTEND YOUR PRESENTATION.
Both "in class" and "agency" proposals DUE JUNE ! May 25 & June 1 will be Rescheduled. Please Note: NO INCOMPLETES. Please do NOT enroll if you cannot complete the work.
