Water Projects

 

In November 2001, 60 faculty members from the American University of Beirut (AUB), the American University in Cairo (AUC), the Lebanese American University (LAU), and the University of California (UCD, UCB, UCLA, and UCSB) met for a workshop in Washington, DC, in conjunction with the Middle East Studies Association annual meeting. The workshop lasted for one day in Washington, DC, for the purpose of small target groups meeting to plan possibilities for collaborations. After receiving an introduction to the BCBC consortium, project groups developed partnership project ideas, presented preliminary proposals and reports, and planned for fundraising. Present at the meeting from the water project group were Co-Facilitator Mutasem El-Fadel of AUB, Co-Facilitator Bassam Younis of UCD, Nicholas Hopkins of AUC, Sharif el Musa of AUC, Fouad Hashwa of LAU, Scott Scooper of UCSB, and William Hoffman of AUB.

In March 2003, the BCBC Water Projects met in UC Santa Barbara (UCSB). Organized by Suad Joseph and co-funded by UC Santa Barbara, UC Davis, and University Outreach and International Programs (UOIP), the meeting was attended by representatives from AUC, LAU, UCLA, UCSB, UCD, and UOIP. The group developed a preliminary proposal for external funding. 

The BCBC Water Projects Meeting took place on March 21, 2003 in the University of Santa Barbara Multi Cultural Center. Those present from the water group were facilitator Scott Cooper from UCSB, Mutasem El-Fadel from AUB, Bassam Younis from UCD, Nicholas Hopkins from AUC, Sharif el Musa from AUC, Fouad Hashwa from LAU, William Hoffman from AUB, Ann Kerr from UCLA, and Osman Galal from UCLA. The schedule of the event included an introduction from Suad Joseph, reports from the November 2002 meeting, a first session where the various project groups assembled and developed proposals, a second session where the various project groups assembled and developed proposals, and a discussion in which the various groups reported back and planned for raising funds.

On March 22, 2003, the Center for Middle East Studies of UCSB held its fifth annual Middle East Studies Regional Conference. The event was held from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the UCSB Multicultural Center. The Water and Environment Working Group held a panel, which included Chair Scott Cooper of UCSB and discussants Sharif Elmusa of AUC, Mutasem El Fadel of AUB, Fouad Hashwa of LAU, Bassam Younis of UCD, and Salem A. Thawaba of the University of Arkansas. 

In October 2007 the Water Project met at UC Davis. Faculty members present include Richard Snyder, and Wes Wallender of UC Davus, Nadim Farajallah of AUB, Richard Tutwiler of AUC, and Jean Chatila of LAU. The gathering was co-organized by Richard Snyder and Suad Joseph.

In October 2009, The Middle East Irrigation Outreach Program Workshop met in Beirut to finalize funding proposals.  Participants include AUB, AUC, LAU, Zagazig University, University of Jordan, UC Cooperative Extension and UC Davis.  The lead Principal Investigators (PIs) were Richard Snyder, Wes Wallender, and Khaled Bali. Participants from AUB were Nadim Farajallah and Nahla Hwalla, participants from UCD were Richard Snyder, Suad Joseph, and Khaled Bali, participants from AUC were Richard Tutwiler and Stephen Everhart, participants from LAU were Fouad Hashwa and Jean Chatila, the participant from Zagazig University was Atef Sweilem, and participant from the University of Jordan was Ayman Suleiman.

In December 2009, Joseph met with water project scholars at Birzeit University.

Early efforts finally merged into a major research project under Associate Dean Jim Hill of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at UC Davis in 2010.

In July 2011, The BCBCB Group applied with Centro Euro-Mediterraneo sui Cambiamenti Climatici, Italy (CMCC, Italy) for funding of the Water Project proposal to “Cross-Border Cooperation within the European Neighbourhood and Partnership Instrument (ENPI), Mediterranean Sea Basic Joint Operational Programme."In March 2003, the BCBC Water Projects met in UC Santa Barbara. Co-funded UC Santa Barbara, UC Davis, and UOIP and organized by Suad Joseph, the meeting was attended by AUC, LAU, UCLA, UCSB, UCD, and UOIP (Raba Gunesakara). The group developed a preliminary proposal for external funding.
