| FACULTY PROPOSAL WRITING WORKSHOP
February 27, 28, 29, 2004 University Club
The Offices of Provost
Virginia Hinshaw, Vice Provost for Academic Personnel Barbara Horwitz,
Vice Chancellor for Research Barry Klein, Dean of the College of Letters
and Sciences, Division of HARCS Elizabeth Langland, and Dean of Graduate
Studies Jeff Gibling are pleased to announce the Faculty Proposal Writing
Workshop on external funding for research and creative activities for
HARCS and Social Sciences faculty to be held on Friday, Saturday, and
Sunday, February 27, 28, 29, 2004 at the University Club. The three-day
Workshop will be directed by a team of University of California faculty
and staff : Suad Joseph (Anthropology and Women's Studies, UC Davis),
Carl Keen, (Nutrition, UC Davis), David Szanton (Emeritus, UC Berkeley)
and Melly Sutherland (External Relations and Grants office, UC Humanities
and Research Institute Irvine).
The first day of the workshop
will consist of presentations on the proposal-writing process for individual
researchers and for collaborative projects and discussions of priorities
of current funding agencies. Continental breakfast and lunch will be served
that day.
The second day of the
workshop will entail 2 to 3 hour sessions by appointment for groups of
faculty who are working or interested in working together on collaborative
institutional proposals, such as funding for a center, a large program
of research, or curricular development.
The third day is dedicated
to one hour appointments with one of the workshop team members for individual
faculty working on their own proposals for external funding.
Materials on how to write proposals and on funding agencies and foundations
are being prepared and will be available at the Vice Provost's webpage
http://academicpersonnel.ucdavis.edu/td_fac_grant_wksp.cfm. All these
materials will also be available at the workshop. Some of the material
will be distributed in advance to faculty who sign up for the workshop.
All workshop materials will be put on reserve at the Women's Research
and Resources library after the workshop.
The Provost, Vice Provost,
Vice Chancellor, and Deans encourage all Humanities and Social Sciences
faculty to take advantage of this important opportunity to develop or
refine proposals for external funding. You do not need to have a proposal
in hand to benefit from the workshop.
Please fill out the form
below if you would like to register for the workshop (no fees involved)
and return to Binnie Singh in the Office of the Vice Provost-Academic
Personnel by February 1, 2004. All registered faculty will receive 3 helpful
guidelines for proposal writing before the workshop: "The Art of Writing
Proposal" by Adam Przeworski and Frank Salomon; "Research Proposal Tips"
by Suad Joseph; and "Components of a Humanities Research Proposal" by
Suad Joseph. Faculty who cannot participate may also indicate that they
would like to have copies of the materials. Faculty who would like an
appointment to work on an individual or institutional proposal will be
asked to write a brief summary of their project (half a page to 5 pages)
to be used in your appointment with one of the workshop team leaders.
Feel free to contact Suad Joseph (sjoseph@ucdavis.edu,
2-1593) or Binnie Singh (binsingh@ucdavis.edu,
2-0963) with questions.
