3.  How do I access the online databases?

a. You may access the online databases from any computer on the UC Davis campus or from the dorms.  You may also connect off campus if you have a UCD LoginID and password.  However, you must be authenticated as a campus user to access the resources.  For more information you may visit the following website: http://www.lib.ucdavis.edu/info/computers/remote.html.  If you experience difficulty you can ask IT services located on the main floor of Shields Library.

b. Once you are set up, follow these steps to access Proquest, Lexisnexis, and Newsbank –

1. Go to the main library web page www.lib.ucdavis.edu

2. Click the link Government Information & Maps (http://www.lib.ucdavis.edu/govdoc)

3. Click the link Newspapers (http://www.lib.ucdavis.edu/govdoc/Newspaper)

4. Click the link Electronic News Resources

http://www.lib.ucdavis.edu/govdoc/Newspaper/electronic.html) – this page links you to

Proquest, Lexisnexis, and Newsbank.  Now you can start your search!

A few pointers

-         If you do your online searches on campus you may email some of your articles to yourself and print them out at home.

-         Be sure to bring money and a copy card if you plan to use the library computer printers and microcopy machines (money/card not required at the computer labs)

-         If you plan on using the microcopy machines be sure to use them during reference desk hours.  Because these machines are old and stubborn (paper jams) you may need to ask for assistance.

-         Finally, don’t hesitate to ask the librarians at the reference desk for help!
